Concealer Crazy

Every teen's best friend should be their concealer. For those random breakouts and pimples that always decide to pop up when there's something special going on! Well, today I'll be sharing with you guys a few of my concealers and hopefully be able to share some more with you as my blog grows. So the 3 concealers I currently have in my makeup collection are: Maybelline Mineral Power Concealer, NYX Full Coverage Concealer and Benefit Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer

swatch order from left to right: maybelline mineral power (2-3 light), nyx full coverage (03 light) & benefit boi-ing industrial strength (02)

Maybelline Mineral Power Concealer:

Price: $6.00 CAD

Location: Shoppers Drug Mart, Walmart (check your local drugstores)

Coverage: Medium to Full (buildable coverage)

Claims: "healthy perfecting coverage with micro-minerals & does not feel heavy or cake on the skin"

Review: this concealer is great for concealing hyper-pigmentation, dark spots or any scars left behind. I personally would not use this concealer to cover pimples because it is in a liquid form, it can slip and slide around during the day, especially if you are active. I find this concealer very thick and cakey when I apply it underneath my eyes so I would not recommend this for covering dark under eyes. It blends very nicely and gives you a flawless coverage if used sparingly (the less the better)

Overall:  3/5 stars

NYX Full Coverage Concealer:

Price: $10.99 CAD

Location: Pharma Plus/Rexall (check your local drugstores or online)

Coverage: Medium to Full

Claims: "provides smooth, long lasting coverage so you can pretend the world concealer doesn't exist in your dictionary. light weight & crease free"

Review: this concealer is great for spot treating and covering those stubborn acne that stand out the most.  Although the concealer claims to be "light weight & crease free" it is not at all light weight and crease free, it is in fact the complete opposite. It is extremely greasy feeling and settled into all my fine lines under my eyes. I gave this a try for covering dark under eye and it disappointed me. Within 30 minutes of applying the concealer under my eyes, it instantly started to crease and slide around my face. It made my under eye area cakey and felt like I was applying oil underneath my eye. It was not at all enjoyable to wear and I was upset to find out that I paid around $10.99 for a concealer that did nothing BUT crease. I now use this concealer to hide stubborn pimples but I need to set it with powder constantly to make sure it does not slide around my face.

Overall:  1/5 stars

Benefit Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer:

Price: $26.00 CAD

Location: Sephora & Some Shoppers Drug Mart

Coverage: Medium to Full

Claims: "camouflages dark circles, shadows, and discoloration without creasing or fading"

Review: this concealer does amazing wonders for my dark under eye. It is in fact an industrial strength concealer that covers just about everything. It does have a cakey feeling to it but is some what light weight. The colour range is a bit off since I did not get it professionally matched to my skin. I had grabbed the colour 02 light/medium but is way too dark for me but the 01 light is way too light for me. It conceals my under eye circles very well and does not crease whatsoever during the day. But I always apply setting powder underneath my eyes as you should with any concealer used underneath your eyes. Don't skip this step, it's very important! Using this concealer with your finger is the best way to apply it in my opinion since it warms up the concealer and blends beautifully into your skin. I also use this concealer to spot conceal and it gets the job done. This is one of the best concealers I've used before and will do until I find another I like.

Kirkland Signature 8 Piece Luxury Collection

Hey Guys!
Recently I went to Costco to pick up a few items and I was super excited when I saw this brush set at Costco. I had recently bought the Borghese brush set in 2011 when it was available at Costco but had to return it because the product was being recalled. I believe the brush set I purchased was out in 2012 so this review may be a bit late, but it's better than nothing! So I decided to give these brushes a try since they are made by Kirkland Signature (Costco brand) and very inexpensive.

Price: $19.99 CAD (may vary depending on your location)
Location: Costco
Includes: 8 different brushes (powder brush, finishing brush, angled cheek brush, foundation brush, all-over eye brush, all-purpose eye brush, crease brush and dual ended angled liner brush) and a designer pouch
NOTE: the image only includes 7 brushes because I had given my sister the dual ended angled liner brush

from left to right: all-purpose eye brush, foundation brush, finishing brush, powder brush, angled cheek brush, all-over eye brush and crease brush

Review:
First Impression - when I had opened the box, I noticed that the brush hairs looked very cheap (ones you would find at the dollar store) but are also very soft. They are not very densely packed like brushes you would find at Sephora or MAC and have a cheap feeling to some of them. The design of the brush makes it look luxurious and perfect for those makeup lovers. It has a gold handle with "Kirkland Signature" engraved onto every brush

The powder brush and angled cheek brush did not meet my expectations. From the package, I could not see the brush hairs properly and was disappointed by the results. Other than the looks of the brushes, these two brushes work well (would not say it is my favourite) and give you a great finish when applying powder foundation, setting powder, bronzer or blush. I tend to use the blush brush for setting my under eye and t-zone area.

Out of the 8 brushes that were in the set, my top 3 brushes would have to be the finishing brush, foundation brush and crease brush. The finishing brush reminds me of a stippling brush but more densely packed and much bigger. I absolutely love using this brush when applying my liquid foundation as it gives me a flawless finish. I find that using a dense brush like the finishing brush gives me a medium coverage oppose to just using my fingers to apply the foundation. I love using the foundation brush as an under eye concealer brush because it fits perfectly under the eyes and is easy to blend. This brush does not leave streak  marks whatsoever and does a good job. The last brush I love to death is the crease brush. Although this brush is meant for the crease, I use it to spot conceal any pimples/scars on my face. It gives you great precision and blends in beautifully with your foundation.

To summarize:

  • the finishing brush is amazing for foundation/powder
  • the crease brush is perfect for spot concealing
  • cheap looking brushes (brush hair)
  • very soft
